Peace Circle™ Movement Gains Traction in Italy: Highlights from Fuscaldo and Beyond

Updated: Nov 26, 2024

November 2024

The inauguration of Italy's first Peace Circle™ in Fuscaldo, Calabria, on November 22, 2024, has sparked widespread interest across Italy, showcasing its potential as a model for promoting peace, sustainability, and community engagement. The event follows the first Peace Circle inaugurated in Finland and highlights the global mission of this initiative.

Event Overview

The project, led by Finnish environmentalist Mika Vanhanen, founder of Peace Circle™, aims to establish Peace Circles in 100 countries by 2030. The Fuscaldo park’s compact design includes symbolic elements, such as the Heart, Head, and Hands Lines. Representing compassion, knowledge, and action, these lines and their trees address essential tasks and values required for peace to grow, connecting people and nature in harmony. At the center of the park stands the Peace Tree, surrounded by the Circle of Guardians, honoring global and local peacemakers and environmentalists.

Ceremony highlights

Local schoolchildren played a significant role by naming and planting each of the 52 trees, fostering a deep connection to the initiative. The event, presided over by Vice Mayor Ernesto Bianco and organized by Cultural Assessor Maria Luisa Santoro, also honored Angelo Vassallo, the "Fisherman Mayor," with the dedication of a tree in his memory.

During the ceremony, the children read an emotional tribute to Angelo Vassallo:"He loved the sea and hated those who polluted it. Angelo Vassallo, the 'Fisherman Mayor,' was a man who fought, practically alone, against illegality. He understood what was happening in his territory: a massive cocaine trafficking operation. He was killed because he wanted to stop it. He protected his land with a determination that continued even after his death."

Global Unity Through Local Stories

The inclusion of Angelo Vassallo in the Circle of Guardians connects Fuscaldo to the broader mission of the Peace Circle initiative: fostering peace by intertwining the efforts of global leaders and everyday heroes. By commemorating local figures like Vassallo, the Circle of Guardians symbolizes a bridge between the global and local aspects of peacebuilding, inspiring communities around the world.

Growing Momentum

Since the event, interest in establishing Peace Circles has surged across Italy, with numerous cities and municipalities expressing enthusiasm for joining the initiative. This growing momentum reflects the alignment of the Peace Circle mission with Italy’s focus on community values, environmental stewardship, and cultural heritage. Future Peace Circles are being considered in cities such as Rome, in time for the Jubilee celebrations, and other municipalities eager to promote peace and sustainability.

Mapping Peace: Virtual Connectivity and Technological Innovation

Peace Circle™ is embracing technology to amplify its impact and accessibility. The Central Peace Tree in Fuscaldo has been registered on a world map powered by TreebuddyEarth, complete with a photo, enabling individuals worldwide to view and connect with it virtually. Additionally, a 360-degree Virtual Peace Circle has been developed, allowing users to explore the park remotely. Looking ahead, a digital twin of the Peace Circle is in development, integrating drone footage to showcase the park across different seasons. This digital twin will offer an interactive learning experience, enhancing educational opportunities and connecting communities globally, reinforcing the initiative’s message of unity and shared responsibility.
